There is some code that might be useful in the gck library by Tom Bech.
(At http://www.ii.uib.no/~tomb/gck.html, or from the gimp distribution)
The opengl code isn't in the newer versions of gck though (because of some
kind of autoconf trouble, apparently), but you might be able to find an 
older version somewhere.

Also there was some code posted to this list in September, which used 
glX-calls to to lots of stuff.

gtkGL has a "real" widget that abstracts all glX-level calls, and IMHO
has a good interface.

So while there are alternatives, I think gtkGL is the best one.

That said, there are a few things that are not yet implemented in gtkGL
yet, visual selection most notably. I have a hack* I use until it gets done,
and if you want it, please mail me.

* A simple glXChooseVisual wrapper, which means you'll have to include
  GL/glx.h, which isn't very nice for portability, but hey...
