Persistant selections (was Re: Strange "delete_event" and "destroy_event")

OK, fixed. It's would also be harder to trigger now since I've changed
things so that arrow keys, etc. remove the selection unless shift
is pressed. (Stefan Jeske pointed out that this is more standard
and more useful than the previous behavior)
