CLIST & background/foreground: bug, feature?

Hi!
I am now playing with the clist widget (0.99.3) and I noticed a strange
behavior of it. First, I compiled testgtk.c where every row had a grayish
background. Then I wrote a little code of my own that basically copies
testgtk.c but the rows there had a white background. The data is there
(I click on it and I can see it). I can also set the background/foreground
by hand but...

Why does it work in testgtk and does not work in mine? I looked through
testgtk and did not find any explicit sets of background/foreground, etc.
