Help with gtk & glib

I am trying to get Gimp ready to install and I downloaded the latest
versions of Gtk & Glib
and unpacked them. I was able to make install for glib without any
errors but when I try to ./configure gtk+-1.1.7  I get the following
messages:
" Checking for glib-config...no
  Checking for Glib-version >=1.1.6...no
   The Glib-Config script installed by Glib could not be found
  If Glib was installed in prefix, make sure PREFIX/bin is in your path,
or set the Glib-Config environment variable to the full path to
glib-config.
Configure:error: Glib1.1.6 or better is required..."

So what exactly is going on here? Thanks for any help.
