GtkRange slider size

I want to make a small slider to fit in the GNOME panel, so it
is going to be about 48 pixels in length. The current thumb size
(the thing you slider, not sure what the proper term is) is 11
I believe from reading the sources. I coulnd't see any obvious
way to make it smaller.

Anyone have a clever trick to do this?
