Center a window

Hi !

What's the best way to center a window (e.g. a dialog) on the screen ?
If I use

  gtk_widget_show(...)
  gtk_widget_set_uposition(...)  ,

one can still see the window move around. :-|

I'd like to set the position BEFORE showing anything... !?

BTW: What exactly do gtk_widget_map and gtk_widget_realize do ?
     In which situations do I absolutely need them ?
