Yes, in fact, that enhancement request was one of the things that persuaded me that I wasn't alone in the world.  But, it looks like it hasn't been implemented yet--at least, the bug isn't closed and my headers don't have the functions mentioned, which is unfortunate, as that would make things MUCH easier.
