X-Already-Forwarded-To-Myself:
Hello everybody, I'm a Traditional Chinese user came from Taiwan.
I'm trying to upgrade my GNOME 1.4 desktop to GNOME 2.2, since GNOME
2.2 is much maturer than GNOME 2.2 and I think it could replace my
GNOME 1.4.
But now I face a big problem with the muti-byte font issue. I would
like to use another bitmap font ( .bdf format ) called "Taipei ming"
instead of Arphic Ming TTF font, becase it's really ugly without AA.
If I turn on AA, it became beautiful but fuzzy. It let my eyes feel
very uncomfortable and tired.
In order to use "Taipei ming" whose encoding is BIG-5 instead of
iso10646-1, I found a perl script called "any2ucs.pl" written by
Mr.Markus Kuhn and use it to translate the econding of "Taipei ming"
from BIG-5 to iso10646-1.
After that, it does work for XFree86 4.2.x, and it does have the same
encoding with Arphic Ming TTF font.(Both the "one" character in Chinese
are at 0x4e00, the only diffrent is that in the encoding which BIG5
don't have that word,Arphic Ming contains strange glyph.)
BTW, it does work at GNOME 2.0, but unfortunately I have removed it
so I can't take a screenshot for you.
As you can see my screenshot at follow URL:
[1]Fonts at xfd, they do have correct encoding and result.

http://bone.twbbs.org.tw/blah/panxfd.png
http://bone.twbbs.org.tw/blah/arphicxfd.png
But when I copy the font to my ~/.fonts, GNOME 2.2 do show this font
is the font config dialog. But it became a box with HEX code of those
character should be shown.
And I tried to used another Unicode TTF font and another Unicode BDF
font called efont, and the same problem occured.
The screenshot of these strange thing:
[2]Fonts at GNOME character map at the same page
of above xfd program screenshot, it became HEX code.

[3]Font config dialog do show the file name of Taipei Unicode BDF
font "taipei-ucs"
http://bone.twbbs.org.tw/blah/fontdialog.png
At first, I thought it's probably casued by GNOME 2.2 did't support
BDF fonts, but clearly I'm wrong since I can use "Sony Fixed" font
for Enlgish.
Then I wornder was that caused by the BDF font was in compact mode,
the BDF font did'nt contains all the encoding in Unicode.
So I tried to use xmbdfed to export BDF from Arphic Ming TTF, it's
very successful and the BDF font does contain zero at those encoding
which BIG5 did'nt have those word. But I can't use this font under
GNOME 2.2.
Following are my Taipei Ming unicode BDF font, it's about 2MB.

I have checked Google and I can't find any page or post releated to
this problem. Could anyone give some advice that what I should do or
where should I checek?
Thank you very much and sorry for my poor English.
