But are they doing this out of some legacy technical limitation that
no longer applies?  Maybe the other toolkit groups simply haven't gotten
around to updating.

I'd certainly like to offer users the option of a more natural interface,
on par with Roman script.  Even if the cost was that I had to maintain
two message catalogs for the new-style and old-style, thats just a few
lines of perl, its a small effort at my end as a translator.  For some
scripts, as in Amharic's case, there is no old-style to worry about.

Ultimately the choice to use the (_M) convention or the newer one I'm
proposing, would be in the hands of the message catalog translator and
their assessement for what they think is best for their community.  All
that is asked of GTK is to recognize the newer notation.  I don't see
GTK suffering from being different from other toolkits here, but rather
benefitting from being innovative.  What's to lose?
