Yup, this is the way to go. Currently the file chooser uses
org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser and a few keys; the source for them is in
gtk+/gtk/org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser.gschema.xml
The easiest thing would be to modify Nautilus to use the file chooser's
equivalent keys.
