after digging a bit deeper, the respective actors are there. So its
probably not an issue of initializing the objects as such. What may be
the root cause though is the following:

/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/ Warning:
g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion `g_type_from_name (name) == 0'

and subsequently:

/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gi/ Warning: invalid (NULL)
pointer instance
  return info.invoke(*args, **kwargs)
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gi/ Warning:
g_signal_connect_data: assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)'
  return info.invoke(*args, **kwargs)
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gi/ Warning: g_object_set:
assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
  return info.invoke(*args, **kwargs)

which the identic code does not produce on an the older installation.
Any ideas on how to trace that further ...
