As has been discussed on bugzilla, I'd like to also get DNS resolving
and network support into gio in the next release. Related bugs:

I don't have an exact status update on the network part, but the
resolver thing is imho ready to go in as is. The network i/o part has
the right design and just needs some reviewing of details.
