What about paint regions (and their pixmaps)? Should we try to combine

I agree that it would be much cleaner than the current setup, but it
would also be a larger change with higher chances of causing bugs in
The current code is sort of bolted on to make it work and not affect the
already working case much, whereas this would be a larger change to the
core of how gdk works.
Anyway, I like the idea and I will look into implementing it in a
(third) offscreen branch.
