Actually, it's worse than that. Anything that isn't binary address random access tends to still use decimal counting. A 100Mbit/sec network card is just that - Mbit being 10^6, not 2^30. It takes _more_ than 1 second to pass 100Mib (mebi-bits) down a 100Mbit link. And all the ADSLs around are sold as 2Mbit/sec, 4, 8.. Some of the cable people go up to 24 around here.
