The counter-argument is one selection per display is too limiting -- because I may want to select a paragraph in one editor window, switch to another to select & copy text, and return to the first window to paste which will replace the selection there.

This is not to say that there can't be a single primary selection that usually can be inserted by the middle mouse button. The scintilla editor widget uses different colors to indicate whether it has the primary selection and that seems to work fairly well.
