That was my thought as well, would it be feasible to introduce a new variable
gdk_std_modifier_mask which could be accessed with
gdk_{set,get}_std_modifier_mask()? This even wouldn't break binary
compatibility, so only philisophical reasons would be prevent inclusion in
gtk+-1.2.x (because it's a feature and you'd need a huge good will to see it
as a bug fix :-).
If I'd get green lights from the core developers, I'd go code the missing
remainder (in which part/file of gdk would such functions and the variable
go?) -- it's only a few lines, not so much that I could mess something up
seriously:-)
