It's working now. I had previously hand-edited the gdk-pixbuf.loaders
file, and evidently I made a small mistake (there are a couple of
places where there are a number of spaces in a row. Perhaps I got the
wrong number?). Anyway, thanks again for the help.

I might suggest that instructions for this be added to the svg loader
package. I did quite a bit of googling before I find the instructions
referenced in my first email.
