thanks for the advice - however I think that this should be fixed in 
GTK+ itself since:

 1) it's not documented anywhere (AFAIK) that tooltips cannot be set 
e.g. on GtkFileChooserButtons or GtkComboBoxEntry controls

 2) it does not make much sense to disallow tooltips on those controls

I'll eventually submit a bug report...
