make gnome pickup a .desktop file for a locally installed app

hi hi,

when a user installs an app locally (e.g. to $HOME)
where does the <appname>.desktop file need to go to so that the startmenu of the
user lists the app.

$HOME/.gnome/share/applications/ seems not to work

Do I have to restart my session or can I ask the menu to update itself.
