A well-configured X11 sends stderr output to a log that users can
examine if need be.
Failing that, users of X11 are often fairly familiar with the concept
of a terminal window, and can reasonably be asked by a developer,
responding to a bug report, to try launching the app in question from
a command prompt to see what stderr has to say.
Neither of the above apply on Windows. Most users have no notion of
what a console window is. And the console is in fact barely usable in
most cases, given that many programs that are launched from Start or
from desktop icons are not in the path, and may be buried in
directories whose names have spaces in them.
