gnome-canvas and removing items

hi hi,

I am reading the Gnomecanvas API docs up and down but don't see a way to *remove
* items from the canvas. When I create an item, it is immediately added to the
parent (which one has to supply) and it is shown. But how can one
a.) remove (not just hide) it from the canvas
b.) clear the canvas (means remove all items)
