atk: what does it do?

In the autumn I'll be using my gtk statistical app with a blind
student, so I'm beginning to think about "access" issues.

In this context it seems to me that atk might be relevant (does it
stand for "access tool kit"?).

I have looked at the docs installed with atk 1.6.0, but they leave me
none the wiser about the purpose and use of atk.  Can anyone enlighten
me?  Thank you.
