can I upgrade my GLib?

i am an entry level linux user using a Redhat linux 6.2, the glib with
this reahat is pretty old, version 1.2 or so. Now i wanna install gtk+
2.2.4, but it requires glib newer than version 2.0.

So, can I just simply upgrade the glib without re-compileing the linux
kernal or some other things?
