You do not have to remove the 1.2 stuff. Just install GTK+2.2 in a different
location.

When you install the GTK+2.2 packages (atk, glib, pango, gtk+) configure them
with --prefix=/opt/gtk2 (for example). Then add /opt/gtk2/lib/pkgconfig to the
environment variable PKG_CONFIG_PATH and you should be OK.
