problems with linking and headers

hi,
tell me please against what to link that function gdk_display_get_default()

and generally i have troubles finding the appropriate libraries

also i don't get that macros G_BEGIN_DECLS, G_END_DECLS, G_GNUC_CONST, G_GNUC_PRINTF and similar
and the headers they are in wouldn't compile ... so i'm forced to use gtk 1.2 which fact i don't really 
appreciate..
please help !
