GtkTreeView basics

Hi all,
 
I'm very new at gtk programming.
I'm trying to write a little C application for
browsing
a filesystem using a GtkTreeView, as GtkTree and
GtkCTree are deprecated (why ???).
Can anyone address me to an example application,
possibly
using xpm for open/close folders and line connecting
items in hierarchical manner ???
