I'm very new to Gtk and am using the 1.2.10 Gtk libraries to try to put

Searching through the canvas, pixbuf, libart and ImLib docs doesn't seem
to do much other than explain what they are an what they do or refer one
to Gnome 2.0 GdkPixbuf documentation. No actual examples where I can
see it being done. And any documentation I can find on the Gnome site
which actually has an example is all for Gnome 2.0, which is not really
helpful to me. Neither has searching through my "Learn Gtk+ in 21
Days." In other words, I've tried to RTFM with no success.

If anyone would be gracious enough to send along a tiny self-contained
example of creating a canvas and attaching a PNG image to it, I would be
grateful.

Have you tried with GnomeCanvasImage?
