transparent widgets

Hi all,

I have a GtkLayout with some movable widgets in it.
Now I want to draw lines between them. But instead of painting to the
layout, it seems more reasonable to put each line in a separate widget,
perhaps a drawingarea, so that each line can me modified individually.

1. Is that the right choice ?
2. How do I make the widgets transparent ?
