Check the gnome_config routines eg. at:
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/tutorials/gnome-libs/using-the-libgnome-library.html
Though you can do it in GTK - there are a few libs available, the gnome
routines are very easy to use. BTW, they are marked as 'deprecated' for Gnome 2,
but GConf ('the future') is still without manual at the above site.
