Question about tab stops in GtkText

(This is for gtk 1.2...)

I've noticed that GtkText's default tab stops appear to be:
8, 8, 4, 4, 4..., whereas regular console tab stops are always 8.

I looked around briefly for maybe a global configurable for this, but had 
no luck.  Is this something that can be configured under gtk-1.2?
