focus colour change

Greetings all.  A couple of years ago I developed an application using GTK
1.2 for the testing lab where I work.  I have multiple windows (GTK apps)
which communicate with RS232 devices and report back the status of the
tests performed.  Recently I saw the need to update to GTK 2.0 but have had
some problems understanding how the mouse focus works.  I notice when the
GTK apps do not have 'focus' their window changes colour.  I have tried
modifying the 'style' (type GtkStyle) structure and changing
GTK_STATE_NORMAL but have not been successful.  In the end I would like for
the colour not to change as the values displayed in each of the windows is
harder to read without mouse focus.  Any ideas??  Help would be greatly
appreciated.
