display text with accents

hi,

i am porting an application to gtk2
i use french accents (éàè ..) but they do not display and i 
get this error : 

** (zzif-client:1696): WARNING **: Invalid UTF8 string passed to
pango_layout_set_text()

can u please tell the way to do it.
