New gnome-applet: use gtk-1.2 or gtk-2

I'm writing an applet for the gnome panel and it'll
take me 2 more months or so to get a good working
version. Now I've seen several messages about gtk-2.0,
and I'm wondering if I shouldn't just program the
applet using gtk-2.0 right away, instead of first
implementing it using gtk-1.2 and port it later. When
will gtk-2 be replacing gtk-1.2?
