I would be fairly quick to blame the CTree - it isn't very robust in
the face of attempts to do "weird stuff." Its methods tend to have odd
side effects.

You could delve into the CTree source code and try to figure out why
things happen as they do, which might reveal a workaround, but it may
be a more productive use of time to just rethink the UI a bit for now,
and maybe try again with GtkTreeView in GTK 2.
