The testrgb program included in the GTK+ source distribution
does such a computation. 

It clearly depends upon:

 - Mode (dithered vs. non-dithered, rgb vs grayscale)
 - Visual (16 bit vs 24 bit vs. ...)
 - Machine speed and graphics card 
 - Resolution
