crap. i recently linked a binary of glibc 2.2.1 to /lib/lib6.so instead 
of glibc 2.1. i did that because of the gtk 1.3.2 problem. it did 
nothing. could the problem be with ld.so? that is if it's failing from 
loading dynamic libraries...

any other things i could try replacing before reinstalling?
