Have you looked into Imlib yet?

It should handle the loading of a BMP format into RGB format
in which case you can then use the GDK RGB buffers to render
them to a GDK drawable.

Or if your ONLY wanting to load a BMP format and no other formats
you can deciper the BMP format and load it yourself into RGB
(3 byte) memory and then pass it to GDK RGB buffers system for
drawing to a GDK drawable.
