GIMP 2.8 opens them just fine and recognizes things like rotation and 
color profiles correctly.

also according to various sources the HEIF (high efficiency image 
format) uses HVEC.265 which quite surely comes with a lot of patent 
stuff attached.

so .. as usual with Apple-stuff the situation is "complicated" as soon 
as you leave their guarded community.
