I won't bore you all with all of the gory details. Just suffice it to
say that I descended down into the deep bowels of glib/libgio and into a
twisty maze of little functions, all utterly undocumented, as far as
I can tell. (WTF ever happened to traditional man pages?? It would have
been Nice if the developers of all this stuff would have at least written
down the functionality that is supposed to be provided by these various

I don't think that's quite true. glib is pretty well documented at:
http://developer.gnome.org/glib/stable/
On this topic, I would be more than pleased to be corrected.
Please do direct me to any documentation that would spell out the
functionality that the developers intended should be provided by any or
all of the following functions:
gtk_show_uri
g_app_info_launch_default_for_uri
g_file_new_for_uri
g_vfs_get_file_for_uri
g_local_vfs_get_file_for_uri
g_filename_from_uri
g_file_query_default_handler
g_app_info_get_default_for_uri_scheme
g_app_info_get_default_for_type
get_all_desktop_entries_for_mime_type
mime_info_cache_init
mime_info_cache_init_dir_lists
get_applications_search_path
search_path_init
g_get_system_data_dirs
mime_info_cache_dir_init_mimeapps_list
I'm not kidding. I would be greatly indebted to you if you were to show
me where the functionality provided by any one of the above functions is
documented in any meaningful way.
On my own, I was not able to find any such documentation. (But as
Dirty Harry once famously said, "A man's got to know his limitations.")
