I'd try also first (a).

The idea of (b) is to use it as a test to see benefits and drawbacks. If
we find it very useful then we can think to move it from the specific
DMAP plugin to core.

My concern is mainly if this feature is a general one, or a very
specific of this plugin. If this is a common case in other services, I
don't mind to look for a way of integrating it in the core. But as DMAP
is the only one showing this so far, I would like to use it as a test to
search for the best approach.
