I don't know about other canvas tools, but Clutter is probably not the 
way to go.
 I spoke to the devs on their IRC recently and Clutter - as a 
toolkit/API - is being phased-out. AFAICT it's being folded-into the 
guts of GTK+4. As a toolkit it will still be around for many years, but 
the end-game is in sight. YMMV.
