Gnumeric splash screen - when does it show up and why?

what's with the gnumeric splash screen?

sometimes it shows up, sometimes not

what triggers it?

also, the last two times it showed up, the window i ended up with had
no minimize button

if i close the window down, verify that no gnumeric process is
running, restart gnumeric the exact same way i started it before, no
splash screen is displayed and i get a window with a minimize button

i'm running Gnumeric 1.8.3, Xfce 4.2.2, Linux
