I am not sure that it would indeed have to touch a lot of things. A
"simple" implementation could simply consist of another option in the
"past special" section to paste only the visible items in a compressed
format.
That is true. It would be a different behavior than the 2 other main
spreadsheet players though.
One benefit to that approach is it adds some functionality that isn't
there with the other spreadsheets with reguard to hidden rows/columns.
If you copy/paste a selection which includes hidden regions, the get
revealed when you paste.

Also - this approach only covers copying from filtered regions, it
doesn't cover any other interactive operations like deleting a selection
etc...
