As for you goffice problem, you should open a bug report and include the full
configure output.

Configure is not picking up some library. What other library does it
need for gnome support? And why would goffice check for itself?

checking pkg-config is at least version 0.9.0... yes
checking for GTK... yes
checking for GNOME... no
checking for GOFFICE... yes

Seems I have an old libgsf-1.14.7 and the latest is 1.9.1. Will try
upgrading.

config.log has:

configure:21786: checking for GNOME
configure:21794: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors
"$goffice_gnome_reqs"
Package libgsf-gnome-1 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libgsf-gnome-1.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'libgsf-gnome-1' found
configure:21797: $? = 1
configure:21812: $PKG_CONFIG --exists --print-errors
