Is there something that can be improved here, to make charting features

Indeed, it is very difficult to find the right option b/c there are so
many. How do other applications handle this.
Is there a tutorial available somewhere?
For example I am in the need to replicate this chart:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=84300&action=view
and Emmanuel Pacaud replied that I could do this:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=84302&action=view
What would be enough since I am going to edit the chart anyay in inkscape.
But how do I replicate the chart?

Helge
