Problem compiling gtkextra-2

When I run autogen.sh on gtkextra-2, I get the following output and
it fails

Locating m4 macro language processor... found: /usr/bin/m4
Building files for libtool... done.
Building aclocal.m4... done.
Building configure... configure.in:7: /usr/bin/m4: Non-numeric
argument to built-in `divert'
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1
done.

Any one any idea what is going wrong here

m4 version is m4-1.4.1-12
