XIRR/Date Question

I'm in the process of extracting the XIRR function 'gnumeric_xirr' in the 
file fn-financial.c for other uses.

My question relates to the dates that this function uses:

p.dates = collect_floats_value (argv[1], ei->pos, COLLECT_DATES, &d_n, 
&result);

(I'm assuming that this line interacts with the spreadsheet)

Any information on these 'double'-formatted dates would greatly be 
appreciated. Are they the number of days since 1900, etc?
