Unsupported file format

I have gnumeric-1.0.4-3.ximian.1.i586.rpm installed, but it cannot open
MS Excel (Office 2000) files. I get an error message "Unsupported file
format". Previous versions of Gnumeric handled these files with no
problems. I have searched the GAQ, list archives and Google to no
avail. Can anyone shed some light on this please?
