Okay I got it to work! :)  Here's how I did it.  I erased
the gnumeric source completely, then REinstalled libxml1
then untar'ed the gnumeric source again, configured, and
it compiled fine up untill the doc error mentioned earlier.
If you edit the doc/Makefile and remove everything but C
from the SUBDIRS line it should work.
