Pointers on creating a statically-linked executable

Hello,
I'm trying to create a statically linked gnumeric executable, using the latest
1.0.9 source release.
When I make the application with ./configure --enable-static the resulting
"gnumeric" executable is stll dynamically linked, (according to the "file"
program).
Can anyone recommend other configure command line options that I should use,
or any tweaks to config.status?
I'm on a Red Hat 7.2 Intel platform.
